Love this thread and I've written down tons of recommendations. Must start reading Stephen King, it seems...never read one of his yet!

I love everything from trashy mainstream things to some of the more 'cerebral' stuff...mainly enjoy fiction though. My favourites:

Golden compass trilogy - Philip Pulman. The movie was okay, but the ending was annoying and stupid, and wasn't faithful to the books. Good books and a little controversial

A Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry. Depressing as hell but a piercingly clear perspective of the human nature. A pleasure to read

Jane Eyre - charlotte bronte - I was so surprised that I enjoyed this, but it is now one of my favourite books. An easy and great read!!

Chrysalids - John Wyndham. Big fan of alternative reality/scifi type things. Futuristic society type book.

also enjoyed - terry goodking, jean m auel, ken follet, crichton

xmpraedicta, I highly recommend Cormac McCartney. If you've seen the movie "No Country For Old Men", please read the book and tell me if they stayed true to McCartney's writing.
He's THE best American writer alive, in my opinion.
And read "The Road", too. Same author.

Let me know what you think.

Well, MJ I may have to read the book because I didn't get the ending to the movie 'No Country for Old Men.' True enough we watched the movie in segments as it was way too violent for the kiddos around. So, maybe we shouldn't have done that. But, both DH and I looked at each other at the end of the movie and said, "Huh??"

read 'the girl with the dragon tattoo' by steig larsson.

do not read it to children, and don't read it if you're predisposed against hearing about the seamy underside of the human psyche. otherwise, excellent read.

I'm looking for some new authors to devour.
Has anybody read any of Lionel Shriver's books and if so, what did you think of them?

I've read that one and "the girl who played with fire" too. Way ahead of you marc.
I'm now waiting for The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest to come out in paperback.

I just finished reading the Larsson trilogy that began with "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." I read them back to back, and WOW, what an engrossing story. Lisbeth Salander is one of the most interesting characters I've come across.

I just started the last of that series at the beach last week.

Too bad Steig died. I'd have loved to read more.

Another REALLY engrossing one I just read was Bad Things Happen by Harry Dolan. It's his first book, but a real grabber. I'll definitely be looking for more from him!

I was out of new books last week so I re-read To Kill A Mockingbird.
I could read it again right now. Such a good book.
